Espacio Arte Abierto is opened in ARTZ Pedregal

February 6, 2020

With the aim of expanding the choice of spaces dedicated to culture in the capital of our country, SOMA in conjunction with the civil association , presents Espacio Arte Abierto, a building located on the second level of ARTZ Pedregal, that will host large-scale artistic exhibitions and cultural projects of various kinds that will also be presented in various spaces across Mexico.

In response to the demand for quality spaces, Sordo Madaleno Arquitectos designed ARTZ Pedregal several years ago, a mixed-use complex located in the heart of southern Mexico City. It is located within a completely urban landscape, on a site of 50,500 square meters, adjacent to major thoroughfares.

After conducting a series of analyses and recognizing the shortage of quality public spaces in the city, the central concept of ARTZ Pedregal was based on the creation of a large public park at the center of the project, measuring 5,000 square meters, established as a primary space with abundant vegetation, organic walkways, squares and water bodies that achieve a feeling of solitude and tranquility in the open air.

With this new project, ARTZ Pedregal will become a generator of cultural experiences, by integrating into this central park a building dedicated to the exhibition of international contemporary art. Espacio Arte Abierto is conceived as a rectangular-shaped element that seems to levitate over a large body of water thanks to its mirror finish. It is a continuous and clear public space that blurs the boundaries between interior and exterior. The floor area of the dedicated space is 750 square meters, and it has all the facilities required to host any type of artwork under international museum standards.

Since its creation in 2019, has received more than 200,000 visitors in the different facilities and activations that it has carried out, including: White Canvas, from the Cocolab collective; Submergence, from the Squidsoup collective; it also collaborated with Illegal Art in four participatory public art activations: The Last Word, Suggestion Box, What Color Are You? and Measure Up, as well as Mnemosyne, by Paolo Montiel Coppa, a giant kaleidoscope that offers the public an immersive experience generated by one of the simplest principles of optics: the reflection of light.

Espacio will be officially inaugurated this year with an exhibition of work by Rafael Lozano-Hemmer, Latidos, which will be open to the public from February 7 to August 16, 2020 at the Espacio Arte Abierto, located in Artz Pedregal 2nd floor, in Periférico Sur 3720, Jardines del Pedregal, Álvaro Obregón, in Mexico City.
